It's nearing the end of WWII, and Michael Harsh has been working for the government on a secret project for years. Finally he is ready to hand over the formula. But the next morning he is dead. It looks like suicide. Only Miss Silver knows it's murder.

The inhabitants of rural British villages don't volunteer information -- especially to the police. Miss Silver know this and has her ways of getting at the facts in a roundabout way -- or sometimes by asking an authoritative question at just the right moment. A close-mouthed villager is no match for the ex-governess-turned-sleuth.

Miss Silver needs all her wiles and all her powers of observation to find out who killed the gentle Jewish scientist Michael Harsch. At first his death is ruled suicide. Then a man is arrested for his murder, probably in error. Scotland Yard is precipitate in building their case. But Miss Silver slowly wends her way through the networks of village gossip to get the big picture.

The clues in the case are oddly important -- bits of gravel and glass in the soles of shoes, misleading remarks, a proliferation of keys to the church (scene of the crime)...

Lamb and Abbott from Scotland Yard are investigating too. Their mildly humorous relationship is best appreciated if you're familiar with these two from other Miss Silver mysteries.

The Key, first published in 1946, is a mature Miss Silver mystery, cleverly plotted, rich in original characters, and nicely embellished with a budding romance. Readers new to the series should probably read some earlier mysteries first to get fully acquainted with Miss Silver's personality quirks and peculiarities of wardrobe. Fans of the series should find The Key a pleasure, as I did.

The Key The Miss Silver Mysteries (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Wentworth Diana Bishop Audible Studios Books Reviews

Another delightful Miss Silver mystery. Patricia Wentworth always has interesting characters with whom she builds an insightful story. Even the crabby head man succumbs to Miss Silver's caring, which is a very real part of her personality. Each time I find one that I haven't read, I just drop everything to "put my nose in a book." This is well worth reading, again and again.
The country cast of characters, the John Bull police detective, the romance, the big oak pin, those are the ingredients Wentworth mixes up for a pleasant read. Yes her books are formulaic but who cares?
Wish there were more authors like this. She keeps me guessing to the very end. I have not read any so far that are bad. Her characterizations are wonderful with many suspects to think over
There's nothing Miss Silver can't deduce as she is called in to investigate the seeming suicide of an important Scientist who had just completed his last experiment on a weapon of mass destruction.
I have been reading the Miss Silver books since I was in junior high school and have continued to re-read them to this day and I'm now 80 years old, at least for the present. .
P. Wentworth is one of the famous authors of old, together with Dorothy L. Sayers, Agatha Christie and so on. The Key was wonderful and so are all the other Miss Silver books. So do read them all. You will be so pleased you did.
The Rev. Margaret Kane
This was written during the Second World war, so there is no help from technology to solve the mystery. Fingerprints are as far as the science goes- no DNA, no surveillance cameras. Some things come right around in a circle though- party line telephones where anyone can listen in improved to the security of private lines, to people walking down the street shouting their business for all to hear.
For surveillance camera substitute conveniently placed young boys who used to play outside at all hours. For traces of DNA substitute conveniently broken glass from a milk bottle for parties to step on and carry around.
Then it's a matter of getting everyone to fill in everything they left out of their statements, and the dramatic scene at the end to make sure there's no doubt as to the guilty party.
Patricia Wentworth wrote during the golden age of Mysteries. My favorites are the Miss Silver books but don't start with the first one. Each Story is a stand alone and this is a good one. The Key begins with an Inventor who has seen a ghost in London and is dead soon after he returns home. Did he commit suicide or was it murder?

The answer revolves around a key to the Church which is found in the dead Man's pocket. The death occurs in a small English Village and has a cast of wonderful Characters. There are old Maid types, and Evacuees, Women of mysterious backgrounds, Widows with Children and British Officers. I had a great time living in this Era. For these Characters were typical of their decade and Wentworth was writing during the WWII period.

This Author has a particular style of writing that Mystery Classic Readers will recognize. The adjectives flow like poetry and the descriptions are particularly good. At times, I felt that I was reading Christie and her book, A Murder is Announced. Miss Silver enters the mystery about mid-way, but there are many clues and even Scotland Yard People on the case before then. So, I never felt disappointed as I may have done in other Mysteries. Miss Silver has a style of unassuming gossip while questioning...which opens up the key to many of the clues. But can she stop the body count?
